The statistics show that most interior designers are not taking advantage of social media marketing. According to an article published by the interior design organization IIDA only 63 percent of designers have LinkedIn profiles, only 44 percent read blogs, and only 34 percent have a Facebook page. Twitter and YouTube are only utilized by 23 percent, while Flickr and Tumblr are not used at all.

The fact that social media marketing seems to be overlooked by interior design professionals is a shame as there are many benefits for participating. Building a social media platform surrounding your personal brand or company helps you establish yourself as a knowledgeable professional in your field. If you do not put yourself out there, people will not talk about you. Furthermore, when you offer your audience help in your area of expertise instead of directly selling to them, you unleash the opportunity to establish a personal connection with your followers.
The good news is that there are a plethora of social media options available, all of which are free. Networking sites include LinkedIn and Facebook, blogging platforms include WordPress and Twitter, and image-sharing entities include YouTube, Pinterest, Tumblr, and Flickr.

Now, there is no eluding the fact that establishing a social media presence can be time consuming. Furthermore, it is not enough to just sign up and create profiles for all of these sites. These accounts need to be maintained. Adding these commitments to an already demanding work schedule may be what is scaring off most professionals today.

There are however companies out there who will take on this responsibility for you for a fee. They will both set up your social network platform as well as maintain them by posting in your voice. Two notable companies that gear their services to the design industry are Adroyt and The Kaleidoscope Partnership. Adroyt estimates that the costs to get you online, creating a marketing plan, and arming you with a stockpile of posts and tweets to be around $3,000 to $10,000. There is also the option to hire them on for monthly maintenance services to produce a steady stream of content for your channels at a cost that is substantially less. The Kaleidoscope Partnership's fees for a establishing and managing social media campaigns are estimated to be around $100,00 and $150,000 a year while noting that working for an individual designer is nowhere near that.

That being said, no matter where you or your company are in your career, there are options available to you to begin your social media marketing campaign. There is no reasvon not to take adantage of them, so what are you waiting for?

  1. DeNae, I like the update to your blog; very savvy!

I wonder if there are any social media platforms specifically for interior designers, and if not, for designers in general. I guess there is Etsy and Pinterest that could be manipulated into a designer-sphere. . . Might be the next big idea!

    1. I love your thinking here and believe that you may be onto something. There really are no good platforms for designers to network other than portfolio web sites such as www.behance.com.
